Concurrent Crash Courses

10:00 AM - 11:00 AM

On Tuesday morning, after you have digested your breakfast, sipped your coffee and enjoyed a moderated panel discussion- BarnRaise is going to get you up to speed on what you need to know to most effectively contribute to your team. Participants will have the choice of one of two breakout style informational crash courses. These courses are specifically catered to you and your background. The courses are engineered to get everyone on the same page and speaking the same language for the work that lies ahead. Designers--you will learn about healthcare. Healthcare professionals--you will learn about design. Everyone wins in the end.

Design Crash Course for Healthcare Practitioners

This year's design crash course is sponsored by Philips Healthcare and facilitated by Knowl Baek. Knowl, an alumni of ID, is a Service Designer at Philips Healthcare where she advocates for human-centered design as a company-wide mindset shift from product orientation to experience orientation. In this session, participants more knowledgeable in healthcare can expect to learn from an experienced designer in the healthcare field.

What is design thinking? This breakout course is for people who want to get a demystified window into what is “design thinking” as a value set, culture and approach to tackling both everyday and wicked problems.

Get in a design mindset. Participants will learn to embrace the designer mindset of beginner’s mind, creative confidence, problem re-framing, and non-linearity.

Learn design language. You will learn and begin using key designer language such as empathy, ideation, prototyping, and iteration. This will be helpful as you work and communicate with the designers on your team.

Healthcare Crash Course
for Designers

Alice Ro is a designer at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. She will be leading this course programmed to get participants with a design background knowledge aiding in empathizing with the healthcare mindset. In this course, you can expect to learn complexities and challenges inherent to the health care industry.

Healthcare is highly regulated environment.
Designers often underestimate this mindset gap. It's not the regulations that are hard to work with, but more learning to work differently in the midst of these regulations. You will learn to overcome this mindset gap to gain empathy for staff motivations and for patients.

Healthcare processes are incredibly complex.
From the individual practitioner to the large academic medical systems, the complexity of processes scales with the scope of the services. As designers, you will learn how you can be productive in the face of complexity.

Design tools. There are tools designers use that are especially helpful in a healthcare context. You will begin to learn about these tools during this course. You will be using them over the next couple days with your team.

Ultimately, these sessions are designed to prepare you for the team sessions ahead so team members have a common ground and common dialog to work effectively.  For healthcare professionals, these sessions provide resources for further exploration of the design process and methods during and after BarnRaise. For designers, these sessions will empower you with a mindset contributory towards insights and innovations in healthcare. Win Win again.

If you haven’t signed up for BarnRaise yet, consider the value of these crash courses alone.
